Athletics history will be made in Kuils River on 13 September when the Medihelp Bike & Tekkie Challenge will be held at Jan Kriel School in the town. For the first time in the history of road running in South Africa it will be possible for a woman to win a road race against men.
The event, organised by the New Balance Multisport Club, will feature a mountain bike race as well as a 10 km road race (an official WP Athletics race). The two disciplines will start 10 minutes apart.
The 10 km event for runners will have a handicap start with the women starting 6 minutes and 40 seconds ahead of the men. The first runner, male or female, across the line will receive the major prize, R1 000.
Kuils River has twice made history in South African road running before, first in 1983 when Johan Dreyer became the first SA man to run the marathon in less than 2 hours 12 minutes when he recorded 2:11:42, and then the next year when Sonja Laxton became the first SA woman under 2:40 with her clocking of 2:36:44.
The Bike & Tekkie 10 km promises to provide huge excitement, with the men chasing the women for the big prize. A race of this nature is a first for this country, although it is very popular in Europe and the United States.
The mountain bike race will consist of a 50 km long route, a 20 km medium route, as well as a short fun ride. The long and medium routes will enter Zevenwacht Wine Estate and follow the contour in the direction of Stellenbosch. Attractive cash prizes will be on offer.
Another exciting feature is the fact that runners and cyclists in the 10 km run and long mountain bike race can compete for the first five positions as well as positions number 10, 20, 30, 50 and 100, for which there will be prizes.
The 10 km road race will start at 07:00, the 5 km fun run at 07:20, the 50 km and 20 km mountain bike races at 06:50 and the bike fun ride (10 km) at 07:30.
