The Safari Half Marathon, 10km and 5km Fun Run

Voted the top road running event in the Boland for 2008, the 22nd Safari Half Marathon will take place on Workers Day, Friday 1st May 2009, starting and finishing at the Huguenot High School in Wellington.

The organisers of this event would like to invite all keen entrants be it walkers, fun runners or beginners, as well as the serious runner to enter the race, and come and enjoy all the fun and excitement this event has to offer. Entrants are encouraged to bring along family and friends to enjoy all the thrills and entertainment the event has to offer. Crèche facilities are also provided free of charge for all children.

The first male and female to cross the finish line in the Half Marathon wearing New Balance shoes will each win R1 000. The excitement does not stop here. Wellington Athletics Club is offering R500 to the first male and female belonging to their club to cross the finish line. For the elite athletes 1st prize in the open categories for male and female runners is R5000 each.

The 2009 Safari event is expected to attract close to 10 000 participants. Entrants can choose to take part in either the 21.1km Half Marathon, 10km Walk or the 5km Fun run.

This year participants stand a chance to win in a lucky draw a luxurious 2 night stay at the Sanbona Wildlife Reserve valued at over R10 000. Sanbona is situated only 3 hours from Cape Town, in the heart of the Klein Karoo. It boasts 54 000 hectares of undulating mountains and plains, indigenous flora and fauna, rock formations and rock art.

The official benefitting charity is the Wellington Youth Care and Education Centre. It was established in 1996 to provide education for learners with special needs. The centre cares for 120 children and has a great need for sporting equipment and other recreational facilities. Any donations on the day or at any of the respective registration points of unused sporting equipment and shoes will be most welcome. These donations can be dropped in the Safari branded bins at these points.

Entry forms can be collected at all major sporting outlets or can be downloaded from the official Safari website www.safarihalfmarathon.co.za.
