With close to 20 000 runners taking part in this year’s Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon on Saturday, April 11, race organisers have put various measures in place to ensure that registration at the event expo is a pleasant, hassle-free experience for all participants.
Known as the largest running-related expo in the country, the lifestyle expo takes place at the Good Hope Centre from Wednesday 8 to Friday 10 April and offers all sorts of interesting exhibits featuring everything there is to know about road running and related elements under one roof.
Closing times have been extended to 20h00 to give runners and other visitors more time to browse through the various stands on offer. The new times are 8 and 9 April from 10h00 to 20h00 and 10 April from 09h00 to 20h00. The expo also hosts the PUMA store selling their latest products and special commemorative event gear to celebrate the event’s 40th anniversary.
All participants will need to collect their race numbers and goody bags from the registration area at the expo and in order to ensure a trouble-free registration experience, they will need to bring a few important things with them. These include their race acknowledgement, Chapman’s Peak indemnity (completed and signed – only if an ultra entrant), some form of photo identification such as an ID document, drivers licence or passport and their ChampionChip.
Those participants collecting race numbers on behalf of others must ensure they have the race acknowledgement and a signed letter giving permission for the number to be collected, plus a copy of the relevant ID document, and a signed Chapman’s Peak indemnity form, if registering for the ultra event.
The Race Office recently received special permission to go over Chapman's Peak and the Western Cape Provincial Government has stated that every runner doing the ultra marathon must sign a special indemnity before race day.
These indemnities will be sent out to all ultra runners, via either email or post and runners are reminded to bring this with them to registration. Spare indemnity forms will be available at registration if runners forget to bring their copies but it may mean that the registration process is delayed slightly. Race organisers are appealing to runners to remember to bring their signed indemnity forms along with them to allow for a smother registration process. Runners will not be allowed to sign indemnity forms on behalf of other runners.
To streamline the registration process even further, participants will no longer be able to make changes to their entries at registration. “We will not be taking any late entries whatsoever at registration, not even from the international runners, as we have done in the past. There will also be no provision for substitutions, upgrades or downgrades either,” said race director Rowyn James.
“We are asking runners to please take note of this and respect and abide by our decision. With the event reaching the 20 000 participant mark it has necessitated us sticking to the entry cut off date and not allowing any late changes or entries for logistical, administrative and disaster management reasons,” added James.
