Celtic Harriers would like to remind all WP athletes of the Don Lock Memorial race that takes place this coming weekend.
Although the event has a strong emphasis on junior development, with over 1500 scholars already committed to take part in the 5km Fun Run, the Don Lock 8km is a serious road race with an impressive history. The past winners of the race read like a “who’s who” of WP athletics. Willie Olivier won the race from 1960 to 1969. Other winners include Ferdie La Grange, De Villiers Lamprecht, Danie Malan, Julian Marsay, Victor Liebenberg, Greg Liefeldt, Gabriel Crisp, Peter Williams, Marius-Hugo Schlechter, John September and Makhosonke Fika.
On the ladies side winners include Aneen de Jager, Patsy Sharples, Judy Ryan, Isavel Roche-Kelly, Janet Grieve, Monica Drogemoller, Juliet Prowse, Norma Nonkonyana and Elana van Zyl (Meyer).
The 8km race records are held by :
Men : John September 22:51 (1994)
Women : Elana Meyer 25:35 (2000)
Remember there are two options:
• The 8km competitive event at 7h30– which has been going for 51 years! This is a fast, relatively flat course – its’ a registered WPA event – with prize money for category winners – so put on those racing flats and let’s see you blitzing through the course.
• The 5km Fun Walk/Run at 7h45 – which will be a highly spirited event with loads of smiling kids, families and those who are newer to exercise.
For youngsters who can’t quite make the 5km distance – DON’T DESPAIR – there is a fantastic Woolworths/SSISA Health Track (like a mini-circuit) – right there on the field for you. Complete this and you will get your very own certificate. What’s more – they have the funkiest Sports Science staff manning it as well as a soccer trickster at one station – so EXPECT TO HAVE FUN!
AND THAT’S NOT ALL!
Other highlights are:
1. Elana Meyer is the special guest – she set the Don Lock female course record many years ago. She will be giving us a special message at prize-giving.
2. The St Joseph’s Marimba band – to get some GEES going.
3. Face-painting for all the kiddies or young at heart!
4. Supersport TV filming the event for Let’s Play – so please look happy – you might soon be a celebrity!
5. The most awesome selection of lucky draw prizes thanks to some GREAT prize sponsors. These include New Balance vouchers ... R1000’s of rands worth, Sportsman’s Warehouse vouchers (many of these), SSISA gym memberships, packing of reading books from Exclusive books, Sports massage vouchers etc – and many kids –specific prizes too – toy vouchers, Aquarium visits...etc – HOW CAN YOU NOT BE THERE FOR THIS?
6. On the Roll and CaffĂ© Pronto on site – so bring some cash to keep the hunger at bay.
