The Western Cape is fortunate to have one of the most experienced and knowledgeable distance coaches in South Africa in its midst. Dudley Hulbert is a quiet, unassuming guy who never blows his own trumpet, but he knows running inside out and has firm views about why South African distance running is in such poor shape.
He has the results to back up his views, having coached some of South Africa’s best female runners – among them Michelle Joy and SA marathon champions Adelene Joubert and Cassandra Mihailovic.
More recently, he has done sterling work with the members of the New Balance Multisport Club (NBMC), where he has been coaching for the past two years. Dudley, whose passion for the sport is legendary, has a keen eye for talent and potential in athletes, and a gift for fostering novices, helping them getting started, improving their performances, and even guiding them to provincial colours.
Dudley has been with the club from day one. Not only has he designed programmes for the training groups and many individuals, he has given training at NBMC a whole new dimension. Most importantly, he has always been available to – selflessly – monitor members and give advice to all.
Sadly, Dudley was diagnosed with lung cancer at the end of last year. He has recently started chemotherapy, which will continue until his condition stabilises.
In spite of the fact that Dudley devoted his life to coaching and runners, he unfortunately does not have medical cover. One can but imagine what the medical bills and aftercare costs will be.
NBMC has decided to launch a fundraising campaign to benefit Dudley. The project will be called “Let’s help Dudley!”, and the objective is to start a fund, the Dudley Hulbert Support Fund, to meet his future financial needs.
With the help of shoe and apparel company New Balance, the club is planning to arrange a trail run within the next month or two. The details will be made available once finalised.
