Dear Members of the Bellville Running Club
I am a volunteer dog walker at the Uitsig Animal Rescue Organisation in Fisantekraal. They are a pro-life organization that rescues all types of animals. We have a small group of dedicated walkers that exercise the dogs on Saturdays. Unfortunately, with over 300 dogs, we don’t get close to giving them each a walk.
I’m writing to your club specifically to tell you about the 14 Huskies that are currently resident at Uitsig Animal Rescue. The Huskies are the dogs that are probably the worse suited to the environment of a rescue organization. I’m certainly not an expert, but I believe that a young healthy Husky should be running around 10km per day to keep it happy, well-balanced and in peak condition. The Huskies at Uitsig are lucky if they get one short walk a week on a Saturday morning, so their energy is never drained.
I am contacting you to see if you may have any members, or group thereof, that might be interested in combining some of their own training with that of exercising our Huskies. It certainly will be a good workout as our Huskies are always ready to go. Or perhaps your club may arrange group outings/community initiatives and this may be something suitable for you to consider.
As a volunteer walker myself, I can affirm to the fact that time spent exercising the dogs at Uitsig is very good for both one’s soul and one’s soles. It is extremely good exercise, the dogs are very good company and it is a good way to get rid of the frustrations of the week.
And, of course, I can’t let the opportunity go by to mention that a Husky is the ideal dog, security guard and companion for a runner and a runner is the ideal adopter of a Husky. As a small time “jogger” myself, I run 5km before work every day with my two dogs and I never miss a day because even when I feel lazy or it is raining, etc, there are two little faces excitedly waiting for their run. And research shows that those that exercise with a dog, are more consistent than those that exercise with other people!
Thank you for the opportunity to contact you regarding this matter. Please feel free to contact me or Elsa, who co-ordinates the dog walking program (084 5005 474), or Uitsig Animal Rescue directly, should you require any further information:
The website address is www.uitsig.org.za.
Thank you and regards
Janette Jordaan
