Deadline looms for Cape Town Marathon entries

The deadline for online entries for the Cape Town Marathon 2012 is fast approaching with Monday September 10 being the cut-off date for pre-entries to the 42.2km and 10km races.

The Marathon on Sunday 23 September starts in Adderley Street at 06h30 and takes runners out to Rondebosch before looping back to the new Green Point Urban Park via Salt River, the Foreshore and the Sea Point promenade - a scenic route celebrating the beauty and history of the Mother City.

The 10km, which also starts at 06h30 in Adderley Street and ends at the Urban Park, is open to runners aged 15 and older. 10km finishers can relax in the Urban Park and support the full marathon runners as they come down the finish straight.

The marathon festival weekend also includes a 5km Fun Run and a 5 x 4.2km relay for clubs, companies and schools on Saturday 22 September. The events, supported by the City of Cape Town, Cape Town Tourism, Western Cape Government: Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport, and Peninsula Beverages, provide a wonderful opportunity for competitors to get involved in a big city event while promoting a healthy, active, outdoor lifestyle.

The Cape Town Marathon serves as a qualifier for the 2013 Comrades and Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon, and organisers have eliminated steep hills and unnecessary turns where possible to create a route that offers opportunities for elite athletes to break records while being manageable for novices. The extended eight-hour cut-off allows first timers and walkers the chance to complete the 42.2km.

Runners can download an entry form or enter online at www.ctmarathon.co.za.

Registration and number collection is at the Sea Point Civic Centre on Friday 21 September between 10am and 7pm and on Saturday 22 September between 10am and 5pm.
