WPA Road Running Incentives

Western Provonce Athletics (WPA) pays an incentive to athletes under the following circumstances:

Incentive Races
Each year a number of races are selected as “incentive races”. The selected races includes the WPA and ASA championships.
The distances for which incentives are paid are 10 km, 15 km, Half Marathon, Marathon and 100 km.
There are different times required of the different age groups to qualify in one of three levels called Grades A, B and C.
The amounts are R250 for a Grade C time, R500 for a Grade B time and R1000 for a Grade A time. There was an exception in Grade A in that all Senior men and women (up to the age of 34) gets R2000 in this grade and Junior boys and girls get R1500.

Positions at SA Championships
Athletes receive an incentive for specific positions at an South African Championship.
Men from the age of 20 to 39 are paid for a place among the top 30.
Women from the age of 20 to 39 are paid for a place among the top 10.
Juniors and men and women from the age of 40 to 49 are paid for a top 4 place.
Men and women from the age of 50 and older are paid for a place among the top 3.

Team positions at SA Championships
If you are part of a team with a top 3 finish at a South African championship you receive an incentive from WPA.

WPA Records
R2000 is paid for a new WP record once the course has been validated. This incentive will be paid for a record on any certified course. An athlete can win only one incentive per calendar year per distance for WP records.

WP Championships
Prize money and medals are awarded for a top 3 finish at a Western Province Championship race. These are awarded in the normal 10 year age groups. Juniors are only awarded for the 10 km and there is no awards for 60 years and older in the 100 km. Prize money will be reduced if there are less than 4 entrants in an age category. 4 and more entrants = 100%. 3 entrants = 75%, 2 entrants = 50%, 1 entrant = 25%.

Bonus incentives
If a runner achieves five (5) or more incentive totals in the WP Championships plus the special incentive races, he/she will earn bonus incentives. These bonus incentives will not be limited to a calendar year, i.e. the minimum of five performances can be set over any period. As soon as the athlete accumulates five qualifying times, the incentive is paid and the athlete then starts from zero again. The lowest incentive will be paid in each case.

Please note that the (Bellville) club is not involved in the payment of incentives. The Bellville Statistician does however note times and report any qualifying runs to the chairperson, should the WPA overlook it. A record of all qualifiers is also kept, should the WPA overlook any bonus incentives due.

There is also WPA Merit Awards for athletes and officials who compete and work for WPA. The Bellville Statistician also keeps an eye on any Bellville runners competing on behalf of Western Province.
