“Bernie Rukadza and Katya Soggot raced to impressive victories in the fifteenth Table Mountain Challenge in testing conditions.
Rukadza completed the 44 km anti-clockwise circumnavigation of Table Mountain in 4 hours 36 min 11 sec while Soggot took just five minutes longer than 6 hours to earn her top spot on the podium.
Athletes had to cope with near-extreme weather in the first leg, having to run through a hail-storm on the Back Table, but conditions mellowed as the sun shone through in the second half from Constantia Nek to the finish at Jan van Riebeeck School.
The race proved an absorbing contest between two trail titans – Rukadza and Puffer winner Edson Kumwamba – with both athletes together at Kloof Nek, just four kilometres from the finish.
Rukadza took that as the time to drop the hammer and immediately opened a gap on his rival before racing clear to a five minute victory.
Soggot had matters much her own way in racing to her 4th TMC title, crossing the finish 11 minutes ahead of Julika Pahl.”
